On Feb. 5, 1879 — four days after a fire in a vault at the Franklin County recorder’s office damaged thousands of documents — the blaze was determined to be arson. The double-walled document vault was meant to protect the county’s land records if the courthouse caught fire. No one ever thought a blaze would be ignited within.
